Visiting & Flying
Yes — guests and prospective members are welcome to visit and observe. Check the Events Calendar for scheduled club flying days when members are most likely to be present.
Guests may not fly at the field without a current AMA membership and a CBRC member present. If you're interested in joining, come introduce yourself — we're happy to show you around and answer questions.
Start with our Membership page, which walks through the required steps: joining AMA, completing the TRUST safety test, and registering with the FAA. Most of these are free and can be completed online in under an hour.
Once you're a member, new pilots are strongly encouraged to fly with an experienced club member for their first few sessions. CBRC has members who enjoy mentoring newcomers — just ask at the field!
Community & Communication
Discord is a free messaging and community platform available as a web app, desktop app, and mobile app. CBRC uses it as our primary member communication hub for:
- Club announcements and important updates
- Coordinating impromptu flying days
- Member chat, photo and video sharing
- Equipment discussions and flying advice
To join the CBRC Discord server, use this invite link: discord.gg/wnEJtQGS6H. Creating a Discord account is free at discord.com.
Scheduled events are posted on the Events Calendar. Members also receive real-time updates through the CBRC Discord server — the best way to hear about impromptu flying days and last-minute schedule changes.
CBRC also maintains a Facebook page where event announcements are shared publicly.
Photo Gallery
We love adding member photos to the gallery! Since the website does not support direct file uploads, please email your photos to info@chesapeakebayrc.com.
Please include in your email:
- Your name
- Date the photo was taken
- Event or occasion (if applicable)
- Aircraft type or subject (if applicable)
- A brief caption (optional — we may edit for length)
Format tips: JPG or PNG files are preferred. Any resolution is welcome — we'll resize as needed. Multiple photos per email is fine.
Weather Page
An ASOS (Automated Surface Observing System) is a network of automated weather stations at airports, maintained by the National Weather Service and FAA. They report conditions continuously in a standardized aviation format called METAR.
The Weather page fetches the live METAR from KBWI and decodes it into plain English, along with an RC flying conditions rating. For a full explanation of every METAR element, see the educational accordion at the bottom of the Weather page.
The CBRC flying field does not have an on-site weather station. Baltimore/Washington International (KBWI) is the nearest official ASOS station and provides the most reliable, continuously updated data for our area.
Conditions at the field may vary slightly from BWI, but the ASOS report is a solid indicator for wind, visibility, and ceiling — the factors that matter most to RC pilots. Always use your own judgment when you arrive at the field.
